The road to Golden Demon
The Road to Golden Demon
Golden Demon season is upon us and for the first time in several years I am compelled to enter. A lot of this comes down to the fact that I am probably painting more than I have since the early days of my career with Games Workshop where we were painting armies for cabinets, displays for Games Day and pretty much one of every new release. Those years gave me the skills to paint effective armies very fast and is something of a specialty for me but Golden Demon has always been a goal that seemed a little out of reach.
I do have a lone finalist pin but in all honesty the less said about that entry the better, the only real lesson I learned is if you choose a less popular category then your chances of success are vastly improved.
This year the season is broken down as follows and poses some interesting choices:
November: Warhammer 40k
February: Horus Heresy
March: Age of Sigmar
May: Golden Demon Classic
Now that is a tight schedule, entering multiple categories in all of the competitions is unrealistic if you want to place. So which do I enter? What do I paint?
My gut feeling is to target 40k and AoS, the main reason behind this is 40k is close enough that I have a target where I can set a base standard, get some feedback from the judges and then assess for the next step. AoS is far enough away I can really devote some time to the entries and probably enter 3 categories. Horus Heresy I find an issue, it is generally very competitive but also expensive to attend. Being at the weekender makes my outlay for the event far higher, combined with the fact it’s so close to AoS I don’t think I will be entering there. Classic just feels a little out of my league at present, it is still the most prestigious with people from all over the world travelling to enter. I would love to place at one of these but it may be a little out of my league for the time being.
Choosing categories is the next step. For 40k I definitely want to go for large model, it feels under entered and is a good canvas for me in terms of my painting style. I like the idea of vehicle also but that means contending with the numerous dreadnoughts that will appear and they are a popular model with the top tier of painters. Squad and single miniature appeal but I know that again these are two of the most competitive so my chances of success diminish. Two categories by November may be doable but a stretch given that I still have some commissions on the go, depending on those I may even take some time from the day job and have a week or so to dedicate to them and get the finished level where I want it.
AoS is something I want to start prepping for early so I can hit 3 categories and use my bonus painting time over the Christmas period to get things finished. I haven’t really researched those categories yet but I do like duel for AoS so will probably start with that.
There is so much advice online for great painters but the one thing I would like is to have a group to work with. I think seeing other people’s progress is a real benefit and having someone to critique, support or demonstrate techniques is one of the reasons the groups do so well. Unfortunately for now it looks like I will be doing it on my own bar online support, we will have to just see if that has any real effect.
The Golden Demon crowd are really welcoming and helpful people and I am looking forward to getting involved, it would be great if in six months’ time I can scrape a Bronze and put Golden Demon winner on my CV!
What are your thoughts? Is there a must enter category? Have I missed something obvious? Or do you want to get involved and share your progress as we go?
